Nathan's Innovation Project

Nathan chose to study cars for his innovation project. He researched questions he had about cars. He was proud that he found 25 facts. He used his research to make a PowerPoint and shared with this with his classmates using Edmodo. Last Nathan built a model car out of Legos.  Nathan learned that it is hard to find facts, but he also learned that he has a strength in building with Legos.

Learning about Risk Management

As part of our Leadership unit in Fifth grade, we look at understanding risk management. The students listed some current issues that they are dealing with. We chose the risk of loading the software, Psishon, onto their student laptops. We investigated the three strategies of reduction, retention and avoidance. Eventually we concluded that the potential risks were greater than the benefits.

Why Focus on Questioning?

I have added a new component to GATE. Each morning we watch a video or view a website and then write 5 questions. Students need to develop curiosity and the skills of questioning to be a 21st century learner. This blog post is a good summary of why this change is good for students.Cultivating Curiosity by Deliberately Teaching Students How to Ask Questions

Emily finished her Innovation project. She chose to study dogs and learned about three breeds. Unfortunately she lost one of her note fact sheets. Emily included two breeds on her poster about Dalmations and Rottweillers. She really enjoyed learning about the history of the breeds.

Interviewing Skills

In GATE today, the students interviewed adults about overcoming setbacks. Savanna interviewed Mr. AJ. She learned that he was in the Air Force and one day he had to run a mile in under 6 minutes. He couldn't do it. It took him more than six minutes. He kept going because he wanted to make his family proud. He learned that hard work pays off.
Savanna learned that you have to ask good questions, care about who you are interviewing and be serious. You have to make them comfortable so they will be interviewed. Savanna thought it was hard to interview someone she didn't already know.

Leadership Unit

We began our Fifth grade leadership unit by making a concept web to show what we already know. Next we listed all the qualities of a leader and sorted them into categories.

Lastly we developed generaliztion about leaders. Our generalizations focused on the traits and characteristics of leaders. We also read generalizations developed by specialists. We will explore these generalizations in future lessons.

Innovation Hour

CH#3.jpg

How are Children in Child Labor Treated?

The people who put children in Child Labor often whip children if they don’t work hard enough. Also children can be beat if they mess up, or work extra hours. The law that was effective was the factory act in 1833.

 Loss of time
Always taking away fun
Brings sadness to families
Obviously will never stop
Ruins childhood

What is the worst part of Child Labor?
The worst part is children don’t get to choose whether or not they want to do it. Instead their forced into it, which is by far is the worst. Please donate on the first page and get info about Child Labor on the second page. This website is short because it was made to inform, but links on the first page to websites where you can donate.
