Pie Graphs and Sexism

Our Concept Based Unit in Fourth grade had been on justice. We studied a variety of subtopics such as bullying, poverty, racism, child labor and sexism. Concurrently we are doing a unit on analyzing data, Analyze This!, for our advanced math curriculum. The two units merged in our assignment on surveying and pie graphs. The students created a 10 question survey on sexism and administered it to various students and teachers. Next we used Excel to create pie graphs. We analyzed each question and then wrote a summary. Here is Carley's summary:

I think that sexism is still a problem. People still can't help to make a joke about it. I think that sexism is not funny. People still make generalizations about things that men/women like and dislike. Everyday someone faces sexism with comments like, "But you're a girl." or "You like ponies? You're a boy." Sexism is a rude body of speech. Don't be sexist. It is very rude and hurtful. Love the genders the same.

Connor studied Nikola Tesla for his leadership project. He decided to make a pop-up book to share his learning.

Cole studied the forensic scientist Bill Bass for his leadership project. He came up with the wonderful idea of putting the things he learned about Bill on a skeleton.

Way to use your creativity!

We have been working on the unit "Journeys and Destinations" which focuses on the big idea of change. The students wrote Diamante poetry about change and did a good job. This group took it to a whole different level. They made a collection of their poems, illustrated them and bound them into a book. They also took some new decorative scissors and made some interesting boarders.

Leadership Projects

The fifth graders are working on their final project for our Leadership unit. Alex finished his brochure on Jason Fried. He picked Jason because, he helped solve world problems. Alex is most proud of the information he gathered on Jason's accomplishments. Alex learned that he likes creative leaders like Jason who look for ideas that work.

Beautiful Artwork by Allie

Allie has been working on artwork for cards. She will sell her handmade cards to help North Alabama Children's Advocacy Center. She has done a great job on her artwork and is working to make the world a better place.
