Leadership Project

Gavin conducted his leadership research on J. K. Rowling. He used decision making to chose a way to share what he learned about J. K. Rowling. Today he finished his board game and was able to test it with three different groups. The feedback was very positive.

Albert Einstein

Emily wrote an essay on Rosa Parks.

Rosa Parks

Rosa parks was a 42 year old woman. She refused to give up her seat to a white man on a

public bus, which is violating the racial segregation laws. She was arrested for breaking the law,

and not giving up her seat. She didn’t get up for the white man, so she was arrested. It all

happened in 1955. She took a risk to change the laws.

She had a husband named Raymond Parks. She had no children either. She had a brother

named Sylvester. Her parents were separated when she was the age of two. Sadly her

grandparents were slaves.

She was a leader in the civil rights movement. The boycott took 381 days. She also began

the bus boycott. She was an activists in the NAACP. She motivated others to join the cause.

She was called the “mother of the civil rights movement”. She communicated to people during

this.

She was loyal, smart, and brave. She was born on February 4, 1913, in Tuskegee Alabama.

She died on October 24, 2005, Detroit Michigan. She was buried on November 2, 2005, at

Woodlawn cemetery.

She was a African American only child. Her Husband ‘Raymond Parks’ Encouraged her to

go back to high school to get a diploma. She persevered and went to highschool. She stood up

for her rights. She motivated others. She was a great person. She died of natural causes. Her

legacies were, african american rights that she left behind. .Her vision was she wanted african

american rights,and that is what she got.

Abraham Lincoln pop-up book

Alexa made a pop-up book. She made this as her leadership project. Her book shows the leadership generalizations vision, effective communicator  risk taker, motivator, perseverance , and legacy

A couple of students used their innovation time to study photography. They took various photos, edited them using online software and then created a PowerPoint presentation on their work.

Amelia Earhart

Fifth graders are studying leadership. We research Amelia Earhart as an example of risk taking. Two students, Grant and Braden got very interested in the mystery surrounding her death. They decided to do an innovation project studying mysteries. The two students gathered primary resources and analyzed the photos for possible scenarios. They reviewed multiple theories and developed their own

Innovation Time

The Third graders are really enjoying their innovation time. Steven and Stephen are learning about gears, motors and programming.

Allyson, Isabella and Anaiah are all enjoying designing on Sketchpad 5.1 and sharing their work on DIY.org

Lastly Jarrilyn and Phoebe are building models and programming them in Lego WeDo 2.0. 

The students really enjoy learning new technology and applying their creative skills. 

Gifted is ...

For Gifted Education Month students created a Color Symbol Image slide to express how they felt about their gifted services and what giftedness is to them. Above is one example of what students made.

Another Innovation Project

Caroline finished her research on Greek Gods and and Goddesses. She used multiple resources, took notes, and then decided on a method to share her knowledge. She made clay models of each of the Gods and Goddesses symbols, and added a brief description of the god or goddess. During her reflection on her project, Caroline recognized the following thinking skills that she used:
note taking, making models, citing evidence, observing, building knowledge, reading, researching  and writing.

Independent Study on Octopus

I have a student that is passionate about marine life. She did background research on octopus and then took notes on the information she learned. She decided to share her knowledge through clay models of various stages in the life cycle of octopi.

Five Traits of Competent Kids

Third Graders have been working on understanding what it means to be gifted. We have investigated the five traits of competent kids; above average ability, task commitment, creativity, caring and courage. After doing activities on each of these traits, the students made "Poof" books to show how they portray the traits of competent kids. See below for examples.

 

 

Fake News Unit by Brian Housand

This unit is about using the Internet to effectively find information and becoming a critical evaluator of the information found. The kids said of today's activity, "my brain hurts." A good sign that they were challenged with rigorous content.  Here are the three activities we did.

The Fifth graders are studying leadership. Today we studied Ben Carson as an example of an empathetic listener. The students chose between three questions for an essay and they did a great job. Here are a few examples.

How can overcoming obstacles make you a better leader?


It can help you become a better leader because you can learn from those obstacles. You can improve the choices you make because of the obstacles you face. Sometimes you might not like facing obstacles but it’ll help you become a better leader. Overcoming obstacles makes you a stronger and better leader. A lot of famous leaders became who they are because they faced obstacles. That’s why it’s good to overcome obstacles.


Why is it important to be an empathetic listener when you are a leader?

It is important to be an empathetic listener when you are a leader because you must listen. If you are a leader you empathetically listen to the rules to follow them. To be a leader you do the right thing, if someone is bullying someone you need to empathetically listen and see if you need to tell a teacher. To be a leader is to come up with good ideas but if you’re in a group you have to listen to other people’s ideas and combine and talk about them. A leader is someone who is friendly if a friend wants to talk to you about something you have to listen. A leader is always listening to ideas. A leader is always empathetic.

Why is it important to be an empathetic listener when you are a leader?                                          It is important to be an empathetic listener when you are a leader for many reasons. One of which is that if you cannot listen and understand what someone else is saying, you cannot help as much as if you were empathetic, because a lack of ability to understand is a lack of an ability to care, which is a lack of an ability to help. Another reason is that you might not be doing something positive for the person. You have to know what the problem is and why they have the problem in order to solve it. The last reason you must be an empathetic person to be a leader is that without empathy, could you really think they are having a problem yourself? That is why I think you must be empathetic to be a good leader.

Yes, I do agree with Ben Carson’s words. It is saying that it doesn’t really matter what we look like or where we come from, it all matters on the inside, it matters on what we are able to do and what our abilities are. Also, that quote is really motivating. It pushes people forward and if someone is having the same problem Ben Carson had, they can just look at his quote and see that he had the same problem and it might motivate them. His quote also explains that everyone has a place in the world even if they don’t think that they do. He is a great leader for everyone in the world.
